Princess Ariel: A Social Biography In the Disney movie ? The Little Mermaid ? one is introduced to Princess Ariel, the youngest mermaid daughter of King Triton. At sixteen years old, she has a wild streak and a longing to get away from home. Her father has forbidden her from interacting with the outgroup of the humans as he sees them as dangerous, but Ariel has a natural curiosity. She witnesses many humans on a boat; while she is watching them a great storm rolls in and throws one, Prince Eric, overboard. Ariel risks her life to save this man she has only seen for a few minutes. She manages to rescue him and make the long journey to shore. He has passed out, and Ariel is seen above him singing. As Eric comes to, he hears her voice, and sees a blurry image of a pretty young redhead. His servant man and dog come along the shore to find Eric, and Ariel slips back into the water to watch from afar as he leaves. She is immediately in love, but there is the obstacle of her living in the sea and Eric living on land. She goes to the Sea Witch who agrees to give her legs, but only if she gives up her voice. After not much deliberation, Ariel signs the contract with the Sea Witch to give up her family and her greatest talent (her voice) for a chance to make Eric fall in love with her. Ariel is given three days on land, with newly acquired legs to make Eric kiss her. If she cannot accomplish a kiss by the sunset of the third day, Ariel will be banished to Ursula’s garden of lost souls. Ariel is a white adolescent mermaid. She is the youngest of the ruling royal family of the sea. As a straight adolescent female, as in all Disney movies, she is boy crazy. I think she experiences role strain as a Mermaid, being that her top half appears human and her bottom half is aquatic. She spends a lot of time looking at herself in mirrors and examining her human half.Tessero ?…
