PSY 330 – Theories of Personality

There are many different theories of personality that have been created, with some more popular and commonly known than others. For this assignment, I have chosen to write about psychoanalysis, specifically Carl Jung and the contributions that he has made to the field. I have learned a lot about many different psychologists such as Sigmund Freud, Erik Erikson, and Jean Piaget, but in all of the classes I have taken I have not learned as much about Carl Jung. I am very happy to use this opportunity to learn more about Carl Jung and all of the fascinating work that he did regarding personality. In this paper, I will discuss the model of personality that I have chosen, as well as give a brief description of one of the major contributors to the field, in this case Carl Jung, and I will also describe one of the major theories of the model that I found most interesting, in this case Jung’s archetypes. In this paper, I will also discuss the many contributions that Jung’s archetypes have made, the methods of inquiry used by Carl Jung and finally, I will provide an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of Jung’s archetypes. I think that by having a better understanding of Jung’s archetypes we will begin to have a better understanding of ourselves and others and the many opportunities that this theory provides for future psychologists to build upon.
