Classical conditioning is a type of learning that involves the formation of an association between two stimuli (or two stimulus types). We typically credit Pavlov for discovering the process of “classical conditioning” (thus we often use the term “Pavlovian conditioning” as a synonym). While studying salivation in dogs, Pavlov realized that the dogs would sometimes salivate in reponse to external cues (such as his presence) that had previously been present at the time that food was given to the dogs.
