When members of a group believe that another group can achieve its goals only at their own group’s expense (and vice-versa), hostility develops between the groups.

Data from many historic periods show that the greater the competition for scarce resources, the greater the hostility between various ethnic groups. Many studies in psychology have found that high levels of racism is prevalent among lower class whites who felt that the black members of the community were taking away their jobs.
